If I had to put a start date on all of this, April 1st would have to be the day. Let's use that time frame to keep everything in perspective. I finished my Network+ book tonight (600 pages), made most of my note cards (about 40 need another 40 to finish), and finished the online training videos (over 20 of them). I have made it a point to use multiple sources for my self-teaching since no one source can really encompass everything. Next up is to finish all my note cards. Right now, I did the command line tools and all their switches and Linux/Unix counter parts. Still memorizing all the port numbers. That isn't too hard. What is surprisingly difficult (and is always been a weakness of mine) is to TALK about the darn thing. I know what it is, the concept is swimming around in my brain but discussing it and not sounding like I am repeating a definition is challenging. Though, I attribute that to the time frame. It has only been a couple of weeks so up until the test I am going to be sure I stay focused. Rather than reading chapter after chapter since the book is now down, each day I'll focus on one aspect of the exam objective and then move on to the next one.
You may be asking, why not do that in the first place? I wanted to get a good overview of the material since everything is so interconnected. I figured it would be easier to connect the dots after "sketching" it out. The million dollar question....am I ready to take the test yet? I feel 70% ready. There are some areas where I still need put more attention. What is great is that my work will be paying for the exam, if I pass. This particular exam is over $200+ so while I do have a deadline set for myself, I don't want to rush into it.
Also, I found a website the other day that is great. Essentially, it was a run down of techincal interview questions for the entry level - mid-range IT job seeker. I do not have the URL but I'll be sure to link it here. What is great is that I was able to answer most of the questions in my head. But, discussing them with an employer...well that is going to need some work. Till next time readers...
