I pushed myself for the first exam, but right away I can tell that the CCNA is a different beast altogether, moreso than I orginally thought. I havn't started my study regimen yet, I'm doing that tonight. No, I decided to take the last week off as I knew I was getting ahead of myself.
I spent some time installing Ubuntu on my desktop at home, dual booting it with Windows. I got away from the networking stuff and just played with all the neat desktop stuff you can do with Ubuntu and some of the features it has. Back in the day, when I was first putting together my first computer, I remember thinking "oooo Linux is for the super users! To hard for me!" Well, the short answer is....it still kind of is, but not what you think. Linux isn't hard to understand, your just learning how things work underneath the hood, the stuff Windows tries to hide from you. It breaks that mold of just being a user per se, and allows you to be really in control of what you want your device to do.
I installed all sorts of stuff to pimp out my desktop. Activated all the cool effects like the wobbly windows and the cube effect for your multiple screens. I also had to troubleshoot some things, like why my speakers were not working for why my settings were being set to default every reboot. I dig that stuff, almost like solving a problem. Believe it or not (for the most part at least), the computers and stuff change very little. There isn't a magical gnome that invades your system and makes it go crazy from one night to the next. There is often a reason why something doesn't work. Maybe its a setting, or a rogue program is causing conflicts, whatever the case may be, there is an explanation. For some reason, it appeals to my nature to tinker around and solve whatever problem it is.
While I was setting up Ubuntu, my speakers weren't working. So, I turned up the volume thinking it was low since I have a habit of turning down the volume knob on the speaker. I looked at some setting and did a search on the multiple forums and found the problem. As soon I switched the setting, out comes some Megadeth that scared the hell out of me at 3 in the morning. I didn't sleep much.
It was good to change up the pace a little bit. Messing with Ubuntu isn't directly related to networking but there is a thread there that can be connected. A lot of adminstrators use linux in various capacities so I imagne I'll learn it at some point. I wanted my first time using it to be on my own. So, now I can get back to...errr....start my CCNA studies with renewed vigor. It is easy to get distracted this late at night but one thing at a time!
As a side note, I deactivated my facebook account for those that still read this. I kind of just got bored with it, and reading the status feed just got too....interesting for me to continue to be apart of it. Anyway, hope you stick with me and keep reading, good stuff to come!
